Creating Kid-Centric Interventions For Kids With Learning Differences
Problem: For
years, Charles and Helen Schwab's foundation had been focused
on assisting the parents of kids with learning differences
to help find the right resources and information. But about
three years ago, Mr. Schwab posed a fascinating question
to the organization: Why not look at this issue from the
perspective of a kid (as opposed to that of a parent or clinician)
to determine if there are any unmet or undersatisfied needs
that the foundation could help address?
Solution: An integrated program of research and program development for kids struggling with a range of learning differences. The outcome was the first research-based portrait of the world as kids themselves see it, and the most pressing needs that are not being addressed through their interactions with their parents, friends, and clinicians. Chief among these needs is the feeling of isolation and the absence of other kids in their lives that can serve as a badly needed support system.
Results:
The creation of Sparktop.org… the first virtual community of kids with learning differences
where they can get support from older kids who understand
their struggles, and give support to younger kids with similar
needs.
